In my earlier Q & A with Nate Fick, he brought up the idea of incentivizing people to serve more. This would be in place of making service mandatory.
I understand the point - the number of ways our government should be able to dictate what we are able to do with our time should be very limited. But, as I have already argued, I think national service is one of the areas that government should be involved - that is, the government has an obligation to require its citizens' particpation. Otherwise, how can a nation actually be a nation? What is the nature of a country? I believe it is when a group of people come together and decide to form some sort of union towards a common purpose. That is what the Founding Father were trying to do, right? Form "a more perfect union." ?
So, how can a country continue to prosper if all of its citizens are unwilling to contribute?
Perhaps I am going too far. Maybe you readers have other opinions or ideas on the subject?
Which brings me back to the idea of incentives. The goal of this blog is to create a forum for visitors to the site to share their views and opinions on the subject of National Service. To this end, I have posted a link so that any of you can share your Service Story with me and the rest of the forum here. To date, there have been only a couple of people willing to submit.
The question I have is - Why? Why not share your story? Why not tell us what it was that drove you to serve and how you feel about requring National Service?
Should there be some kind of reward? Something to incentivize people to share? If so, that would be ironic.
