As is a ritual in my house during the fall and winter, I spent Sunday and Monday night watching the NFL. I am huge fan. But last night, as I was watching the Brett Bowl between the Vikings and the Packers, I found myself thinking about my old profession.
There were a couple of recent articles detailing a battle in Afghanistan that occurred this past weekend. Eight US soldiers were killed. It was the deadliest attack on a US base in some time in that conflict. One of the articles detailed how wounded Americans refused to leave the battle.
While I was never wounded during my time in Iraq, I do know what that feeling is - it is the feeling of never letting your fellow warriors down, of never leaving them behind.
I wonder, how many people watching Brett Favre and hearing over and over about what a warrior he is, how many of those same people were thinking about those true warriors fighting and dying in a lonely combat outpost thousands of miles away in Afghanistan?
I bet the number was very low. And I bet that of those people who were actually thinking about Afghanistan, most if not all of them have either served or been connected to someone who has.
I highly doubt there were a lot of civilians thinking about anything more than watching Favre, in off-putting Vikings jersey no less, throw another long bomb.
All the while, real bombs were exploding.

I agree 100% with your thoughts on how many people were most likely not thinking about soldiers overseas. I found myself thinking about it often since it started, and even more when I began dating a Marine who was serving in Iraq.
This past Sunday (10/18/09) I believe more people were thinking about soldiers during the Redskins game due to their halftime performance from a Marine Corps band.
I once came face-to-face with someone who actually said she doesn't believe the war overseas is an issue in America, it surprises me how people don't think about what's going on with our military.
I blog a lot on my blog, itsaveteransworld.wordpress.com, about how veterans aren't treated with the respect they deserve. Here is a link to the post about my encounter with the girl who is ignorant about how the war is affecting this country.
I would like to hear from you on my site and talk further about issues concerning the military and its veterans.
